How To Break Bad Habits In Your Canine With Training

It is common for people to adopt a puppy or dog without thinking of the consequences. You have to be totally committed if you want to own a dog. The training needed ensures they’re obedient. If you decide to adopt a puppy or dog, use the tips in this article to get a good start.

Although a well trained dog can be taught to put up with just about anything, there will be times and situations where they are truly uncomfortable with a person, another animal, or a place. Don’t force your dog to suffer through more of this discomfort than is absolutely necessary. There is a reason that they are uncomfortable and you need to determine that reason.

When teaching a puppy basic commands, start with ‘sit’. This is the easiest one for a dog to master. Hold his favorite snack just above his nose, and firmly say ‘sit’. Most dogs will instinctively sit down at this point. Offer him the treat and don’t forget to praise him profusely. If he doesn’t sit, gently push his rear end towards the floor. After he has been sitting for a few seconds, give him the treat, and like before, remember to praise him.

When training your dog, it is important to add play into the training sessions. This will help keep your dog interested. Play with his toy and show him how much fun you are having. This will help a dog with low motivation to stay interested. When you want him to take a toy, don’t shove it at him, make him take it from you.

While training your dog, observe his body language and general behavior closely. Look for signs of enthusiasm. Is his tail wagging? Does he follow you around? This shows he’s ready to learn. If you see your dog is scared, bored or nervous, stop what you are doing and reevaluate.

When trying to train your dog, always reinforce positive behaviors even when you’re not actively in a training session. It’s easy to remember to reward your dog during a training session, but it’s just as important to reward your dog for those trained behaviors the rest of the time, too. This builds a good connection for the dog between the behavior and the reward.

Training sessions with your dog are best when kept short. Since dogs have a tough time paying attention, you do not want to draw out the process. If you want to continue, then give dogs a quick free play break.

When you are training your dog on a certain behavior, look for a quiet place to train him. Dogs can be easily distracted by everything around them. So, in order to keep your dog’s attention on the task, do the initial training in a quiet room. Your dog will learn quicker this way.

No matter how long you have owned your dog, you can always train them. You want to avoid the chance the dog will hurt someone, so moving quickly to start training is important.
