Any dog owner should consider their pet’s diet when looking to correct behavioral problems. As with humans, dogs are what they eat. If their diet is not nutritionally sound, internal and external problems can develop. Make sure your dog is eating his best, and improved behavior will often follow.

Keep your dog active. Dogs can get bored very easily. A bored dog will try and find something interesting to do, and training is not usually interesting. Your dog will be more relaxed and willing to listen if he is exercised frequently. Make long walks or daily runs a part of your routine that you and your dog can look forward to.

Provide your puppy with his own chew toys to alleviate the pain of teething, and try to keep other items out of reach. Give it one of his toys instead. If the puppy is suffering any pain from teething, freeze a wet washcloth for him or her to chew on.

Consider hiring someone to help you train your dog. Just like playing a sport, pet training is a skill that takes time to develop. Everyone has their own style, and it may be that the way you are interacting with your pet is not quite working. Another person can help you see how to tweak your training sessions to make them a better fit for you and your pet.

Don’t force your dog to go into his crate. Instead, profusely praise him when he enters his crate on his own. Young puppies, in particular, might be somewhat afraid of the crate when it is first introduced. If you force them to enter it their fear might turn into terror. Their natural curiosity will eventually override their fear.

The first step in dog training is commanding control. Your dog must understand that you’re in control, so that he knows to obey and respect you. Never allow your dog pull on the leash while you are on a walk.

Have flexibility when training your dog. Be willing to vary or change a routine if it isn’t working. You may need to try different locations or times of day. You may need to adjust the duration of your training schedule if it is too long a session, or too short.

Do not train your dog when you are angry or stressed. Not only will you have less patience, but dogs are incredibly receptive to their owner’s moods. By skipping training when you are not at your best, you can be sure when you do train, it will be much more effective.
