Taking Care of our Pet Dogs

Tips For Raising A Happy And Healthy Dog

Do not allow your dog to walk you; take control and walk him while making sure he stays well-behaved. In this article, you will find important information on dog training which every owner should know.

Don’t ever ignore good behavior from your dog. If they do something good, even if you didn’t ask them to do it, make sure that you reward them for it in some way. If you start to ignore them when they have done something desirable, then they will see no reason to keep doing it.

Just because your dog is obeying you, do not assume that they are done learning. Your dog is always learning. Never stop reinforcing good behavior. This is especially important if you move. A new surrounding can be very distracting for a dog. You might have to reteach them a great deal.

To break your dog of bad habits such as jumping, the best technique is to ignore him, for just a short period! Dogs don’t really understand yelling in a situation like that. But if you turn your back and avoid further interaction, he’ll get the idea that he’s done something that breaks contact with you and dogs want to be our friends!

Make sure you’re not reinforcing an undesirable behavior. You don’t want to give your dog treats or special attention during training if they’re not performing the task properly. If you do, then they’ll think you’re pleased and continue to do things the way they’re doing them, and they won’t improve.

All dogs should be taught the basics of obedience training not only to keep them safe but to protect people and other animals to which they are exposed. Start teaching your dog how to sit, stay, heel, come, and understand the word “no” as soon as he is old enough to be trained. Even the calmest dog may unexpectedly start to chase a car, a bike, a cat or a squirrel. Giving the command “no” or “come” should stop the dog in his tracks and prevent him from getting hit by a car or endangering the person or animal he is chasing. Some dogs tend to jump on people as a means of welcoming them, but this could be dangerous to small children or elderly people who aren’t steady on their feet. Telling your dog to “sit” and “stay” eliminates this concern. A well-trained dog not only makes a pleasant companion but also reduces the risk of accidental injury to himself or others.

Dogs need at least 60 minutes of exercise time every day, on top of training and bathroom breaks. Your training will be easier and more effective if your dog gets good daily exercise. Keep in mind that a dog that’s been exercised regularly is happier and more responsive to your commands.

If you do not know how to train your dog the right way, you might get exasperated. However, after reading this article, you can use the information you have gleaned to teach your dog how to be a perfect family member.
