Train Your Dog To Be The Dog You Want

Many dogs are abandoned because owners get frustrated with them. This is very sad. A dog that is trained well will be a happy dog and a good member of your family. Training your dog can be simple to do, if you use the following steps.

Dog training is not something that is easy to do properly, which means you should do your homework. Learning how to train your dog is almost as important as learning about dog behaviors and how they interact in a pack. Knowing what your dog expects from a pack leader makes training the animal much easier.

Teaching a dog to know its name is the first dog training task a new dog owner should undertake. The name is used in calling the dog and just in getting its attention. Therefore it is more appropriate to choose a short and easily enunciated name than a longer and more confusing one.

Dogs often become destructive because they are bored and lonely. Consider a house dog that destroys the sofa while you are away from the house. Consider the larger outside dog that chews up the shrubbery. The answer to alleviating their destructive behavior might be as simple as spending more time with them or buying them a new toy.

When giving commands to your dog, do not repeat the command over and over before getting a response. By giving the command one time and waiting for the dog to respond, you will teach him that you are expectant of a behavior. If the command is not obeyed at first, show your pet what you expect before saying the command again.

Most dogs respond better to positive reinforcement rather than negative punishment. If you’re trying to train your dog, reward him for good behavior and only scold him if absolutely necessary. Your dog will remember the reward for good behavior more distinctly than the punishment for bad behavior, making rewarding more effective.

Start training your dog early. Many people believe that very young puppies are too young to learn. The reality is that even puppies as young as six weeks old are able to begin the basics of training, and starting early ensures that your puppy will have a strong foundation for more advanced training later.

To train your dog to stop begging for human food, you should completely ignore him when you are eating. If you pay attention to him, he will think he has a chance of getting your food, and therefore he will never stop begging. If you ignore him during your mealtime, he will soon learn that begging is pointless and stop.

Never reward bad behavior with the intent of quickly ending a certain behavior. This only tells your dog that it has the choice to do whatever he wants and that you are under his power. For instance, giving a dog a treat each time it barks.

As you can now see, it’s not impossible to teach your dog how to behave. Training your pet, offering him plenty of love and attention, and being mindful of your dog’s needs are key. Embracing the ideas presented here will lead to you owning a pet that you will always be proud of.
