You Can Teach Your Dog To Obey Your Commands

If you want to go about training your dog but aren’t sure how, then look no further. Here are a few ways to make crate training more positive for your dog. If the dog doesn’t want to get in the crate try putting a chew toy in it and close the gate when they’re not there. Temptation wins with this exercise; your dog will be eager to enter the crate when a treat is waiting for him. If they do go into the crate, offer up praise and a treat.

Your home is your domain. Your dog must see the environment they live in as your territory. Stepping around a lying dog or not moving the animal from a place you intend to use gives him the right of way. This should not be allowed. Dominance in the pack means exercising your power in a non-confrontational way but with firm resolve that this is your territory.

Repetition is the key to success when teaching a dog a new command. It may take about 25-50 repetitions of a particular command before your dog understands it. Keep teaching it and be patient. The dog will learn in time.

When doing early leash training, select a nylon leash about six feet longer. A leash made of leather or other heavy material will drag on the dog’s collar even when you aren’t attempting to give a reinforcement, and can be extremely distracting for the dog. Once your dog is fully leash trained, however, leather leashes may look better and last longer than nylon ones.

Crate training is a good skill for a dog of any age to have. Teaching your dog to stay in their crate quietly takes time and patience but can be a valuable tool while potty training or a safe place for him to stay while you are away from the house.

After each training session, spend a few minutes playing your dogs favorite game with him. If you do this every time, your dog will know it’s coming after the training sessions and will be excited when it comes time for your daily session. The more excited he is, the better he’ll do.

After your dog training session is completed, finish with a command that you know your dog already can do. This allows your dog’s subconscious to remember that it has completed the days training, and can also help your animal to retain the information it has learned from the training session. It also will help maintain the routine.
